Just watched your show concerning the Indonesian domestic helpers. Hmm, I have a suggestion. I understand exactly the employers' hesitation for a weekly day off as all sorts of horror stories (which are true) are associated with them and it's happenning even in Singapore where I spend a lot of time in (and in spite of the policing and legistation). Could we start up some sort of domestic helpers' association whereby they can gather in a controlled environment and certain personnel could keep track that the members in their area are turning up for the gatherings and are not displaying signs of abuse when they attend the gatherings. Of course, the concern is who will pay. Well, I think all the stakeholders including the Malaysian and Indonesian governments and the domestic helpers' agencies in both countries plus corporate sponsors could contribute towards this endeavor. Oops let's not forget the employers too. After all, every party named above are benefitting from this industry and are definitely suffering due to the ban, which is certainly a no-win situation. Also, perhaps there are some volunteers out there who would like to pick up this idea?? or perhaps Tenagawanita could lead on this? But we definitely need some kind of Ministry involvement to ensure the sustainability of this proposal.
On a personal note to Florence, hi this was the first time I just happened to tune in to your program. Good job, I think you did zoom in on a very current and important topic. Hopefully, you will get lots of public feedback cos I think that's where you will get the most valid suggestions plus build your viewership at the same time. Perhaps you could slice out a small portion of your airtime to reveal certain public suggestions that may have been picked up by the relevant authorities and give more accountability and impact to your show. Of course this involves much more work on your part to sift through the public comments and to forward the good ones to the relevant authorities. All the best. Jayme
I was watching Point of View last night about Najib and kept wishing I had been there answering your questions.
If you need studio guests for future discussions on politics, I hope you'll consider asking me. I'm the author of the book "March 8: The Day Malaysia Woke Up".
I'm now retired from full-time journalism but was with the NST for 21 years (were you there at one point?) and The Star for 8 years.
