It's the Superbowl season in the U.S. right now and every single picture or tweet that I've seen of the YouTube artists I follow in the states are ALL talking about the superbowl. Heck, even Martha Stewart has recipes specially for game days!
But because it's Music Mondays, I'm going to talk about the superbowl & music, and maybe leave the food out for tomorrow.
I don't know if you've heard of Kina Grannis, famed for her song like "Valentine" and "In Your Arms"; of which the latter was featured in the ABC series "Pretty Little Liars". Kina, unlike most YouTube artists, first got her big break in mainstream media when she was picked as the winner for the Doritos Crash the Superbowl Contest back in 2008.

The Superbowl is one of the biggest sporting events in the U.S. and companies like Doritos throw in millions of advertising money for their ads to appear during the games. With the growing popularity of YouTube back in those days, Doritos decided to feature a musician in their ad and the winner would ultimately win a contract with Interscope Records (home to the likes of Far East Movement, Black Eyed Peas, etc). The videos were subject to voting and Kina emerged as the proud winner, with her ad being aired during the game.
However, Kina didn't want to be restricted creatively and decided to forfeit her record label, releasing her album "Stairwells" on her own. To think that she actually let go of the label opportunity to continue writing her own music is truly inspiring.
What I like about her is her acoustic style and cheeky lyrics, personal favourites include "Valentine", "The One You Say Goodnight To", and "In Your Arms" which comes with an amazing video filmed entirely with jelly beans!
Sometimes with the hard work put in, clicking that one "like" button on their video does show great support for independent musicians. If you love their music and don't have the means to get the album, you can try doing that for starters and share their music (with credits of course) to let them know they're appreciated.
