Tasty Tuesdays: 6 Course Japanese Lunch
So I was with my fellow colleagues at the launching of the Doraemon World 2012 last week (which I will blog about in a later post) and was served the most amazing 6 course Japanese Lunch at Tokyo Teppan that day :)
Truthfully, I've never been to Tokyo Teppan (situated in Pavilion, KL) even though I've walked past the restaurant a few times. It sorta always seemed like a typical teppanyaki place and I'm not the kind who has a particular love for teppanyaki. So when I was served these 6 amazing dishes, I was pleasantly surprised at what they had to offer.
Being a 6 course meal, the food was served to us in small portions, starting from their appetizer of Grilled Eggplant & Marinated Smoked Salmon. I didn't like the Grilled Eggplant because it was a cold dish and the taste of ginger in it was too overpowering; however the marinated smoked salmon was so good I nearly stole the serving that was placed opposite me for someone else.
After the waitress placed a plate of wasabi & shoyu (soy sauce) for each guest, out came their Sashimi platter. The salmon was good, the kind that melts in your mouth. Also, even though it's my first time, I absolutely loved the raw hotate (scallop) because it had this really soft texture, unlike that of a cooked scallop.
As usual, tempura is big part of Japanese food. We were served a tempura platter with two ebi tempura (prawn tempura) along with a slice of sweet potato tempura. I have to note though, the ebi tempura made me drool because I love prawns and these were really fresh! They wrapped the prawns in what I assume is a shiso leaf before battering them to fry, thus creating this fresh taste that couples really well with the sweet prawns.
Now this is where the main dish comes out, and we were served an Australian Angus Beef Steak with Garlic Butter Soya. Steak lovers beware, this dish is addictive! I usually eat my steaks medium well to well because I cannot take the taste of raw meat. However, I ate every single bit of this medium steak and loved it! I give credit to the garlic butter soya sauce though, it was the reason I didn't taste the rawness of the meat.
By this time, my colleague was already close to being stuffed but we had 2 more dishes to go! The next dish was a simple one, Inaniwa Noodles in a soy based soup with scallions and inari as toppings. I'm a big fan of soups and I was happy I had a warm bowl of noodles despite the heavy steak before. The noodles were okay I guess, nothing to shout about but it does remind you of the simplicity of Japanese cuisine.
Last dish to come out was dessert, and by this time I was like "Oh yeah, I made it to dessert!" Maybe the person who planned the menu knew the guests would be stuffed by the time dessert came, so they gave us a scoop of green tea ice-cream and strawberries with fresh cream at the side. Ice-cream = liquid so it didn't really take up a lot of stomach room you see; and the strawberries were sweet (always hits the jackpot when it is) so I managed to eat everything up and was so grateful I had a wonderful lunch.
Would I visit Tokyo Teppan on my own to try out the food on their menu? I'd say yes after this wonderful experience... I just hope it doesn't disappoint!
Note: This review is not of their menu items but their food from what I was served that day, not too sure if the items I had are in the menu but I guess it's worth a try to check it out.
